The primary and secondary parts of the observed compression behaviour of soils can be separated with the help of a numerical procedure utilising digital computers, based on a chain of Kelvin units and a non linear dashpot element to represent the onedimensional compression behaviour of soils. Distribution functions for the retardation spectrum facilitate easy computation of the viscoelastic parameters involved.
