Some recent observations of soil microfabric are presented. These observations were made during a number of
different studies: the development of shear zones and surfaces in clays of varying plasticity; the strenght variation in a

different studies: the development of shear zones and surfaces in clays of varying plasticity; the strenght variation in a
marl; and a comparison of intact and reconstituted sample behaviour ol low plasticity clays. Three methods have been
used to obtain information on different levels of detail: the polarising camera, the optical microscope and the scanning
electron microscope. The observations illustrate the role of microscopy in soil mechanics research and demonstrate its
usefulness in developing qualitative explanations for and insights into soil behaviour.
