Slip surface search in slope stability analysis

 

 

This paper presents a method for locating the slip surface with the lowest safety factor. The method is
based on Nonlinear Programming and uses the pattern search method and the SUMT technique. The slip surface is
approximated by a broken line whose coordinates at the vertices are the variables involved in the minimization pro·
blem.
From these preliminary results it is to be observed that the approximation is still good even when the number of ver-
tices is small, The critical surfaces were found to be noncircular in shape.
