The results obtained by means of the self-boring pressureineter in three italian clays are presented and evaluated,

comparing them with those obtained from in situ vane tests and conventional laboratory tests on good quality undisturbed

samples. Substantial differences between the shear strength and the stress-strain behavior determined in laboratory and

in pressuremeter tests are reported; though a full understanding of such endings is not yet possible, some of the factors

influencing them are discussed.
