The maint objective of this paper is to detail the concept of incremental non-lineariry and to discuss its relevance in the formulation and evalutaion of constitutive equations for soils. Three broad classes of constitutive theories are discussed in the light of their incremental formulation, including non-linear elasticity, elastoplasticily and hypoplasticity. The relative merits and limitations of each class are outlined with emphasis on those inherent features of their mathematical structure which might be of help in the assessment of their predictive capabilities when applied to practical geotechnical problems.
