The paper deals with a clayey waste material resulting from mining excavations in the Santa Barbara clay (Central Italy). Owing to the effects of excavation, transportation and dumping, the material is made up of blocks and fragments of the original Santa Barbara clay in a clay matrix. The waste tips, up to 70 inhigh, cover areas of several kmq. The behaviour of the waste material was studied using piezometric measurements, settlement analyses and laboratory tests on samples taken at different depths. On the basis of these results, a numerical model of the consolidation process was developed that allowed to predict the real scale behaviour of the waste material with good approximation.
