Measurement for the reduction of seismic risk – Remedial works on the foundations of masonry buildings in Sellano

 

The recent Umbria-Marche seismic sequence (1997-1998) represents one of the few cases of a direct comparison between earthquake records and behaviour of masonry buildings damaged by the earthquake.

The high level of damage caused by a moderate magnitude earthquake sequence, also in buildings subjected to reinforcing works, induces at careful investigation of structural and geotechnical aspects.

Many buildings in Sellano have been subjected to recent strengthening works only in the superstructure. These works prevented the complete collapse of the structures; nevertheless they did not prevent very significant damage in different part of the buildings. In this paper, on the basis of the dynamic characterisation of the subsoil and of the evaluation of the ground motion amplification, remedial works are proposed for the foundations of two masonry buildings located in the centre of Sellano; the Town Hall and three ordinary terraced buildings.
