Ludington pumped storage project; embankment design

The Ludington Purnped Storage Project is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and uses the

lake as the lower reservoir. The upper reservoir, located on the lake blutls, is formed by a continuous embankment six

miles long. An asphalt lining on the upstream face of the embankment overlapped at the toe by a clay blanket lining

the bottom of the reservoir, forms a continuous impervious membrane. The reservoir, with a capacity of 83,000 acre,

is constructed on a 30 feetdeep loose to medium dense glacial outwash deposit, overlying dense materials. Author reports

on the design and construction of the embankment, including foundation preparation, asphalt and clay lining and provi-
