There is at present a widespread tendency towards the introduction of limit state philosophy into code of practice or regulation documents. This tendency is supported by the fact that limit state concepts are aimed at clarifying the role of the prescribed safety factors, by focusing the attention on sources of uncertainties. Different scenarios, related to ultimate, serviceability or maintenance conditions are built by designers, with the purpose of producing cheaper results or even safer results in those areas where a deeper investigation is still required.

Howerer, despite these advantages, the transfer ofthe present code format, as used in structural engineering, to geotechnical iield is not so straightforward. The present paper is aimed at discussing some peculiar aspects, such as the meaning and assessment of characteristics values of soil parameters, the influence of soil-structure interaction on load factors, the role of statistical tools and the meaning of conventional lumped factors in geotechnical practice.
