The influence exerted by the time factor on the ground deformation regime in soft ground tunnelling is

well known.

This factor can be expressed as a function of the rate of tunnel advance and the rate of deformation of the soil adiacent

to the opening.

For shield driven tunnels, the problem lies in the accommodation of the time factor into the ground loss computations.

For shield driven tunnels, the problem lies in the accommodation of the time factor into the ground loss computations.

ln the pnresent paper an effort has been made towards deriving some qualitative relationships which relate the time

factor with stability factors, tunnel and shield geometry, and finally the total volume of ground loss due to tunnel

excavation.
