The protection of roads and railways against the rock-fall havard is one of the main problems involved with transportation engineering in Alpine and coastal areas. The rock sheds design should be based on the correct evaluation of dynamic impact loads.

ln this paper, a 2-D DEM code (UDEC) is used to simulate the impact of rock blocks on a plate covered by an absorbing cushion of gravel-like material. For this purpose, a simple numerical model is proposed to reproduce the results of laboratory impact tests. Relevant laboratory impact features, as plate bending and support compliance are progressively introduced to refine the numerical model. The influence of the numerical parameters on the results of simulations is presented, and the procedures followed to calibrate the model are discussed. Next, simulations under different design conditions (block mass, block speed and absorbing cushion thickness) are analysed, and a relation between impact energy and plate reaction is proposed for design purposes.
