This paper traces the evolution of various methods for estimating the shaft friction of driven piles in dry soils. The recent IC design method has a high reliability but requires sophisticated sampling and testing.
There is thefore scope for simpler approaches. The method developed in this paper takes as its starting point the fact that the two dominant variables are the effective overburden pressure and the lateral effective stress acting on the pile. This leads natually and fundamentally to the correlation of the effective stress parameter. The correlation given to the paper demonstrates that a simple linear relationship exists between these two fundamental parameters with a reasonable degree of reliability which, as expected, is somewhat less than that of the IC method.
