After several decades devoted to developing sophisticated phenomenological constitutive relations for dry and saturated sands and clays, new needs in geotechnics have led us to consider the question of constitutive modelling from a different point of views. After discussing this recent reorientation, two new incrementally non-linear constitutive relations with only five parameters are presented. Finally some applications involving the conventional compression/extension paths which are linked to the question of material instabilities in loose and dense sands are dealt with as illustrations of the capabilities of these constitutive relations.
