The purpose of this paper is to discuss the analysis and design methods of tunnels in squeezing rock conditions. Closed form solutions and numerical analyses are addressed first. Then consideration is given to observation and monitoring during excavation and construction of the actual tunnel or a test tunnel. Rather than giving theoretical details of the different approaches, emphasis is placed on the solutions which have been developed in order to produce quantitative descriptions of the squeezing behaviour of rock masses, with possible applications to tunnel practice.
