Decision theory is applied for an optimal choice between two alternative sections of an industrial canal for
the environmental control of the St. Gilla lagoon, Sardinia. In the case studied, the mayior source of uncertainty is
concerned with the possible presence of a rock stratum in the upper levels of the subsoil, buried at different depth in
the soft silty clays of the lagoon.
Decision process is formally structured in order to identify the “action” logically consistent with the exigency of reduc-
ing monetary risks, with probability assignments regarding the occurrence of the rock and with the decision maker’s
preferences.
In the paper, the different steps of decision process are illustrated and some considerations on factors influencing de-
cision results are made.
