A computer-controlled triaxial apparatus for sand, which has been developed at the Department of Structural Engineering of the Politecnico di Torino, is presented. Two main experimental aspects are discussed: the various sources of errors affecting the axial strain measurement and the influence of the sample preparation method on the mechanical soil properties. The tested soils were Ticino silty sand and Toyoura sand. A comparison between triaxial and resonant column test results is also provided.
